Laravel is one of the most popular frameworks for developing web applications in PHP. It offers powerful tools with clean syntax.

But as a Laravel developer, you will come across some errors.

In this article, I will discuss 10 common laravel errors, what causes them and how to solve them.

1. Class Not Found Error

The Class Not Found error is one of the most common errors in Laravel.

Causes

  • Incorrect Namespace
  • Class File Missing
  • Incorrect Class Name
  • Composer Autoload

Solution

Run the following in your terminal.

composer dump-autoload

Ensure that your namespace and class name are correct.

namespace App\Http\Controllers;
class UserController extends Controller
{
public function index()
{
return view('users.index');
}
}

Ensure the file is saved in the correct location.

2. Route Not Found Error

When trying to access a route, you may receive a Not Found (404) error.

Causes

  • Route not defined
  • Incorrect URL
  • Incorrect HTTP method
  • Outdated route information in the cache

Solution

View all defined routes.

php artisan route:list

Flush the route cache.

php artisan route:clear

Define a route.

use Illuminate\Support\Facades\Route;
Route::get('/users', function () {
return 'User List';
});

Visit the route.

http://127.0.0.1:8000/users

3. CSRF Token Mismatch (419 Page Expired)

Laravel includes protection from Cross Site Request Forgery (CSRF) in form fields.

If a CSRF token is missing or invalid then you may get a 419 Page Expired error.

Solution

Include the @csrf tag in your Blade file.

@csrf

Register

4. Database Connection Error

You may receive a database connection error if Laravel is unable to connect to your MySQL database.

Common causes:

  • Incorrect database name
  • Incorrect username or password
  • MySQL service not running
  • Incorrect database host/port.

Solution

Open up your .env file and ensure the following are correct.

DB_CONNECTION=mysql
DB_HOST=127.0.0.1
DB_PORT=3306
DB_DATABASE=my_database
DB_USERNAME=root
DB_PASSWORD=

Update the config.

php artisan config:clear

Ensure the MySQL service is running.

5. Migration Error

Laravel migrations are used to help manage database tables.

Sometimes errors can occur due to duplicate tables, incorrect column structure or foreign keys.

Solution

View migration status.

php artisan migrate:status

Run any outstanding migrations.

php artisan migrate

If you’re using a development environment and want to reset your database then run.

php artisan migrate:fresh

Please note this will delete all your tables and data so never run this on production unless you know what you’re doing.

6. Storage Link Error

Sometimes images or files you upload won’t show up in your Laravel application.

Become a Medium member

This is usually due to the public storage link not being present.

Solution

Run the following command.

php artisan storage:link

Upload an image.

$request->file('image')->store('uploads', 'public');

Show uploaded image.

Ensure the file is in the correct location.

7. Vite Manifest Not Found Error

Laravel uses Vite to manage your front end resources such as CSS and JavaScript.

You may see the following error.

Vite manifest not found

This is generally due to your front end resources not being built.

Solution

Install dependencies.

npm install

Build for development.

npm run dev

Build for production.

npm run build

Ensure the manifest file is created in the right folder.

8. Method Not Found Error

A BadMethodCallException can be caused by calling a method that doesn’t exist.

Causes

  • Incorrect method name
  • Spelling mistake
  • Incorrect object
  • Not available in package version.

Solution

Carefully check your class and method names.

class UserController extends Controller
{
public function getUsers()
{
return User::all();
}
}

Ensure you’re calling the correct method.

$controller->getUsers();

Ensure you have imported the correct class.

9. Permission Denied Error

Laravel requires permission to write files to certain folders such as storage and bootstrap/cache.

If the permissions aren’t correct then you may receive a permission denied error.

Solution

On Linux check the ownership and permissions of your folders.

sudo chown -R www-data:www-data storage bootstrap/cache
sudo chmod -R 775 storage bootstrap/cache

Ensure you’re using the correct web server user.

Don’t give your project unnecessary write permissions.

10. Application Key Error

Laravel uses an application key to encrypt data.

If the application key isn’t present you may receive an error stating that there is no application encryption key.

Solution

Run.

php artisan key:generate

This will generate a new application key and update your .env file.

Ensure your .env file is writeable.

Never share your application key.

Bonus: Debugging Laravel Errors

Useful commands to know:

php artisan optimize:clear
php artisan route:listphp artisan migrate:statuscomposer dump-autoloadphp artisan config:clear

You can also view your Laravel log file.

storage/logs/laravel.log

When working on your application locally you can turn on debugging by setting.

APP_DEBUG=true

in your .env file. Please note that you should always turn this off in production.

APP_DEBUG=false

Conclusion

Understanding common Laravel errors will help you become a better developer.

By knowing the cause of the error and how to solve it, you’ll save time, create a more stable application and create better web applications.
